The Most Important Skill or Practice for Progress

Movement is usually the solution. Similar to some of the quotations and sayings in the book “Born to Run,” movement is helpful when you are tired and need more energy. When you have too much energy, you can’t sit still; when you’re having trouble concentrating, when you’re bored, the solution is to move!

Movement does not have to consist of moving your body. It can consist of moving your mind around your body. Your awareness, your feelings, your sensations from head to toe and all around. Practicing the art of sensing and feeling improves our ability to sense and feel, which in turn improves our ability to know where our body is at in space and time, to know our body more intimately, to know our body more accurately, and to more accurately perceive where we are in relation to our environment as well as objects in our environment and the rest of our body.

Our minds are constantly moving. Our ability to keep our minds still and focused on that one thing, that one sensation, on that one part of our body. How can one attempt to successfully control their body and their movements if one cannot successfully control and direct their mind? This is why our movement program begins and ends with our attention. Focused effort over time equals maximal progress.
