Yesterday I had the opportunity to participate in a group max interval work out. Interval training has gotten a bunch of hype within the past 5 years because of the return on time investment, 20-30 minutes of exercise for the same calorie burn as most hour to hour and a half workouts. With interval training you can burn a high number of calories in a short time because you are ramping up your intensity between 90-100% exertion for short periods of time, then resting for longer periods and then repeating. The concept of max interval training is to push yourself on an exercise to the max or as close to it for a minute or longer, then rest for 30 seconds to a minute (or no rest at all) and go to the next exercise. This is similar to circuit training done with resistance/weight. Usually the exercises are more aerobically inclined or cardiovascularly challenging when termed interval training. Hyperfitness and Insanity are two popular versions of this type of training. Below is a list of a sample to try if you’ve never done max interval training. A) Burpees for 1 minute B) Alternating Reverse Plyometric lunges for 1 minute C) [...]

Today marks the 3rd day in a row in which we’ve had over 100 degrees on the thermometer. I decided to take my triathlon indoors for today’s workout. I started by swimming a 1/4 mile in 15 minutes. Next I jumped on an incumbent bike and rode out 13 miles in 42 minutes. Finally, I ran a 5k in 25 minutes. I still can’t figure out a way to burn off the 2 large pizzas I ate last night in an hour and thirty minutes.

To celebrate this years tour de France I decided to take my first cycling class…. and not just your ordinary cycling class. The class was in Durham, NC at www.syncstudio.net Surprisingly enough it is a synchronized cycling class done standing up off the seat the whole hour fifteen minutes. The most challenging part for me was keeping the rhythm with the rest of the class and learning the moves. My quads were loving every minute of it until they just went numb. Also worth mentioning was the amount of sweat that poured off of me, es mucho! Needless to say it was a hell of a workout. After eating like a fatty mcfatterton over the July 4th weekend, I needed to blast around 1000 calories. Sync Studios also have a yoga studio and personal training area. I have to give them props b/c I like the concept. Now that’s “working-outside the box!”
